Today, some form of medical or recreational marijuana is legal in 37 states, and the U.S. legal market is projected to double to $41.5 billion by 2025. As the pandemic continues to put pressure on bank earnings, cannabis-related businesses (CRBs) can be a valuable source of non-interest income in the current environment – and low-cost deposits when the economy rebounds. This session will help Western bankers deepen their knowledge of this opportunity, make informed decisions about serving this industry, and take the necessary steps to gain an early mover advantage on new customer relationships. It will also demonstrate how bankers can use data and technology to drive efficiency and scalability into their compliance programs while enabling them to gain a competitive advantage in the market.
More and more states are legalizing the medicinal or recreational use of marijuana. The new administration in Washington is expected to take a more favorable view of the marijuana business than the Federal government has done in the past. The House’s passage of the SAFE Act and the MORE Act may be further signs of changes to marijuana banking rules. This program will examine the current state of cannabis banking laws, and likely future developments.
Banking cannabis isn’t a turnkey operation; it requires thoughtfulness, technology, and comprehensive strategic and operational planning. In this session, we will explore the pillars of Enterprise Risk Management including cannabis focused risk assessment, policy and procedure requirements, oversight and audit, and train compliance professionals to be able to take the next step in banking cannabis.
