The BNP Paribas Open is the most-attended WTA (World Tennis Association) Premier and ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Masters 1000 tennis tournament in the world, and the largest two-week combined event outside of the four Majors (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, US Open). It is held annually at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, one of the world’s most beautiful tennis venues and is the second largest tennis stadium in the world. Dr. Robert Eyler, President, Economic Forensics & Analytics

Dr. Robert Eyler is President of Economic Forensics and Analytics, specializing in public policy analysis for firms and governments.  He is also Dean of the School of Extended and International Education and Professor of Economics at Sonoma State University.  He earned a Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis and a B.A. in Economics at CSU, Chico. Robert has been a visiting scholar at both the University of Bologna and Stanford University.

Leland Chan, SVP, General Counsel, California Bankers Association

Since 2000, Leland Chan has been the general counsel for CBA, after serving for six years as associate counsel. In addition to advising the association on legal matters, he directs the litigation activities for the association, frequently acts as amicus curiae (“friend of the court”) in state and federal courts, and, in some cases, files suit on behalf of the industry. He is also responsible for regulatory matters affecting banking, frequently preparing comment letters on regulatory proposals, and analyzing new laws and regulations for CBA members.

Kevin Gould, SVP, Director, State Government Relations, California Bankers Association

Kevin Gould joined the CBA in 2004, bringing with him more than seven years of legislative experience. Gould serves as one of CBA’s registered lobbyists, focusing mainly in the areas of bank operations, commercial lending, residential property lending, construction dispute resolution, wealth asset management and trust issues.

Buck Bierly, Founder and President, MZ Bierly Consulting, Inc.

Buck Bierly is the founder and President of MZ BIERLY CONSULTING, INC. a company specializing in building the business development processes that match the cycles in a changing banking environment.

He spent the early years of his sales career building and managing relationships for information services and technology companies.

In the mid-eighties, Buck shifted his focus to the financial services sector and began working with leadership teams in commercial banks to build high-performing and sustainable business-to-business sales processes in their banks.

Today, he and his team continue to work with their clients to navigate the rapidly changing banking environment by advising clients on continually adjusting their business development processes to produce sustainable results in spite of constantly changing market conditions.

Their client base currently includes 75 commercial banks throughout North America.

Buck is a graduate of Franklin and Marshall College, a former Faculty Member at the Center for Management Development, Rutgers University and a Faculty Member of the Pacific Coast Banking School.

Buck and his colleagues have been a frequent speaker at national and state banking conferences, banking schools and has published articles in a number banking trade journals. Their white papers, newsletters and blogs are viewed by 10,000 bankers each month.

Barbara Boccia, Senior Director, Wolters Kluwer U.S. Advisory Services

Barbara Boccia is senior director for Wolters Kluwer’s U.S. Advisory Services. She is a seasoned compliance professional, having served senior-level compliance roles with major consulting firms and mid-to-large-size financial institutions. She has assisted banks with regulatory examination preparation and response engagements. Boccia is a CRCM, holds a J.D. degree from University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, in Sacramento, and she holds an  M.B.A. degree as well.

Alaine O. Williams is a Process Solutions Manager at Farmers & Merchants Bank of Long Beach.  She has worked in the lending industry for over 19 years with concentrations in loan processing and servicing.  Over the years, Alaine managed a variety of centralization initiatives and processing workflows for data integrity, portfolio monitoring and risk management.

Joanna Bruno, Founder, J.R. Bruno & Associates

Joanna Bruno is an acknowledged advocate for Small Business lending nationwide and a frequent speaker at SBA Lending conferences. Since she founded J.R. Bruno & Associates in 1994, the company has built a solid track record of assisting Lenders with establishing and maintaining profitable SBA and Business Lending departments. Alex Liberchuk brings 15 years of Commercial and SBA lending experience to J.R. Bruno & Associates. Olaf Vlieks is a Managing Director at AlliancePartners responsible for growing BancAlliance’s presence on the West Coast. Prior to joining AlliancePartners, Mr. Vlieks was responsible for outreach and coordination of BlackRock’s Financial Market’s Advisory services with banks and FinTech companies. Until 2012, Mr. Vlieks was at RBC Capital Markets advising West Coast banks on M&A and capital raising transactions. Mr. Vlieks also has several years of experience working in the Credit Administration Department of Silicon Valley Bancshares.

Cheryl Lott, Shareholder, Buchalter

Cheryl M. Lott represents corporate clients, banks, mortgage companies and other financial institutions in both state and federal court. Her practice focuses on general business and commercial litigation, as well as construction defect litigation, toxic tort defense, class action defense, special assets related litigation, and labor and employment litigation. She has significant experience in preparing all aspects of a case for trial or
arbitration. Ms. Lott also has extensive experience working on local, state, and federal regulatory matters and government procurement matters. In the regulatory realm, Ms. Lott has significant experience assisting financial institution clients with Bank Secrecy Act/Anti-Money Laundering detection procedures.

More specifically, Ms. Lott’s areas of emphasis include BSA/AML customer due-diligence and enhanced due-diligence procedures, employment counseling, contract disputes, independent film finance disputes, unfair competition, deceptive trade practices, product liability, and creditors’ rights and fair debt collection practices.

Ms. Lott is the chair of the Firm’s Pro Bono Committee. She is a member of the UCLA Alumni Association Board of Directors, UCLA School of Law Alumni Board, and a member if the Los Angeles County Bar Association Litigation Section.

Shannon has practiced public accounting since 2006, after a career in retail banking. As a member of the firm’s Financial Services Group, she provides audit and review services to governmental entities engaged in lending activities, credit unions, and community banks, including SEC registrants. Shannon has served financial institutions ranging in size from $50 million to $10 billion in total assets.

Jeff Clair, Partner, Moss Adams LLP

Jeff has practiced public accounting since 1988 and has served as the lead audit partner for numerous financial institutions and SEC reporting companies. He was previously a partner at a regional accounting firm specializing in providing services to financial institutions and served in the internal audit department of an $18 billion dollar institution where he led the bank’s implementation of FDICIA.  Jeff is a member of the firm’s Financial Services Group and has served as a speaker for various topics to industry trade groups and for internal staff training. Services to financial institutions have included leading an initial public offering, SEC reporting, merger and acquisition assistance, credit and operational reviews, and internal control evaluations.

Tingting Zhang is the founder and President of the TerraCotta Group. She oversees the firm’s investment process and manages portfolio risk. 

Before founding TerraCotta, Tingting was a senior researcher for one of the world’s leading consulting firms. She conducted political and economic risk analyses for senior executives of global financial companies such as Citigroup, AIG, Deutsche Bank, and PricewaterhouseCoopers. She also consulted for the National Intelligence Council of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and contributed to the Lehman Brothers-Eurasia Group Stability Index, the first and only political risk index on Wall Street.

Tingting has contributed to a number of research projects that were featured in The Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times, Newsweek, and The Economist. She has written and published extensively on public finance, central-local relations, and environmental issues in emerging economies. Tingting co-founded the Special Assets Management Association (SAMA), the only trade association for banking executives in special assets management. SAMA has more than 100 bank members and has two chapters, in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Tingting sits on SAMA’s board of directors as a co-chair.

She holds two master’s degrees, one in statistics and the other in international relations, and has a PhD in international political economy from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Substitutions are allowed, at no additional cost. Written notice is required for all substitutions/cancellations. The full registration fee will be refunded if written notice is received by February 10, 2017, and 50 percent if by February 24. No refunds will be provided after February 24. Registrations made on or after February 24 are not subject to refund.

What to Wear

The attire for the conference is business casual. Temperatures range from 90 degrees during the day to 65 degrees at night. The classrooms can be cold, so please bring a sweater or jacket, just in case.
